DIY Vegan Spinach, Avocado & Activated Charcoal Hair Mask for Dry Natural Hair

Spinach + Avocado + Activated Charcoal Hair Mask Recipe:

We're officially neck-deep in Winter dryness. Brittleness and a lack of shine seem to haunt even the most loyal coconut oil users. It's hard to find deep conditioning treatments for textured hair and natural hair. So while the rest of the world catches up to how awesome curly hair is, here is a killer DIY hair mask you can make right at home to combat frizz and dryness for your unique hair type.

This vegan recipe includes a bunch of goodies to make your hair shine without the weight or harshness of chemicals. The key ingredients include activated charcoal, a half of a ripe avocado, a handful of fresh spinach, and unsweetened organic coconut milk. Everyone's hair and skin are unique and it may be hard to find that one perfect recipe. For a customization boost of hydration, select 1-3 additonal ingredients from the list below to most benefit your unique hair texture, needs and scalp. Mix and match to make your own custom treatment based on your needs!

Key ingredients:

  • Activated Charcoal: Purifier. Absorbs harmful chemicals and toxins that may be trapped in your strands. Throw in a couple tablets or a teaspoon scoop if you’re using powder form.

  • A Fresh Avocado Half: Rejuvenator. Avocado is a staple of any healthy hair routine at this point and it's no wonder why. It helps promote growth while healing damaged strands. The avo is known for its abundance of protein, amino acids, and vitamins.

  • A Handful of Fresh Spinach: Strengthen. Spinach is rich in the essential healthy hair vitamin Biotin, along with other B-vitamins and essential minerals for strong, healthy hair.

  • Unsweetened Organic Coconut Milk: Repair. Rich coconut milk will create a beautifully smooth ‘smoothie’ consistency for easier application while also infusing your strands with moisture to repair and smooth damage, tame frizz and strengthen from within. Start with half a cup and add more until you’ve reached an easy-to-apply yogurt consistency.

Add in 1-3 additional ingredients depending on your hair needs:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Anti-Inflammatory.
Great for sensitive scalps that might need a little extra attention. ACV also fights dandruff and soothes an itchy scalp. Can remove excess oils without drying. And since ACV helps cuticles lie flat, it's perfect for combatting frizz and adding shine too!

  • Tea Tree Oil: Soothe Flaky Scalp.
Tea tree oil is very antibacterial and can help heal any cuts or scrapes on the scalp that may have been caused by itching or dry weather.

  • Olive Oil: Moisturize.
Duh! Olive oil is well-known for its insane moisturizing game. But not only that, it can help balance oily hair while adding shine to strands that may appear dull and dry.

  • Banana: Protect.
This ingredient is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Okay, maybe I'm just from the Gwen Stefani generation, but there is no shame in this fruit's game. Rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates, and vitamins. The banana helps add elasticity, softness, and shine.

  • Coconut Oil: Shine.
Would it even be hair post if coconut oil wasn't mentioned at least once? By this point, you've probably read (and experienced) the magical powers of coconut oil. By adding shine and strength it is definitely a staple for any hair routine. Ah, coconut oil, what can't you do?

  • Essential Oil: Fragrance.

To give your hair a boost of fragrance, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil! This will make the overall experience more enjoyable and leave your hair smelling amazing.

  1. Whip out your blender and add in all of the key ingredients.

  2. Select 1-3 additional ingredients from the list above depending on your unique hair needs. Blend all of the ingredients for 30 seconds or until incorporated.

  3. Play around with the ratios until you’ve reached a yogurt consistency for easiest application.

  4. Apply the mask to your hair and let it sit for 45 minutes.

  5. Thoroughly rinse the mask off in the shower. Once your hair dries, take a selfie with your rejuvenated curls!

So bust out that magic bullet your mom gave you over the holidays, and whip up your own custom hair mask. Take the time to figure out what works for your hair! Embrace your waves and worship your curls. After all, there is no one quite like you.
