What's In Your Beach Bag?

Now that summer is here and the sun is blaring, it's time to protect our precious hair and skin from the harsh UV rays! No matter your shade, skin, or hair type, your skin and hair can take quite a beating in the summer heat if not properly taken care of. When it comes to skin, the sun can be a bit of a bully. While everyone loves catching rays and soaking up vitamin D, the sun doesn’t always treat us so nicely in return. In fact, sun exposure is known to accelerate premature aging, irregular cell growth which can lead to cancer, and can even go so far as to destroy essential proteins in our hair which leads to both frizz and hair loss. Here are some summer must-haves for healthy and protected hair and skin, the espinache way.

Probably the most important summer must-have is a sunscreen. Yes, sunscreen! And yes, for all beautiful shades both dark and light. You may be surprised to find out that not nearly enough people wear sunscreen. Both physical and chemical sunscreens will do the trick to prevent sun damage on your skin. It is typically a good rule of thumb to use a sunscreen with at least 15-30 SPF for both your body and face, and reapply as needed throughout the day. For lighter skin, a stronger SPF is best. For darker shades, use a lighter SPF so your natural pigmentation doesn't have to work so hard. Experiment with different sunscreens to see which works best for daily use and find one that doesn’t irritate your skin. To help combat that dreaded white residue try adding a couple drops of your favorite foundation before rubbing it in. For face, you can also find foundation with built in SPF.

After you get back from a long day at the beach, it’s nice to slather on an intensive moisturizer onto skin and hair to repair your skin's natural barrier. Moisturizing your skin will allow it to feel renewed and refreshed after sun exposure. Our (SPIN)Therapy Moisturizer is perfect for the summer because it contains aloe, which is your skin’s best friend when it comes to soothing sun burned and sun kissed skin. If you do happen to burn, moisturizer will help hydrate and cool while helping to alleviate redness and help prevent peeling. For an added cooling factor, store (SPIN)Therapy Moisturizer in your fridge.

The more textured your hair is, whether it's waves, curls or kinks, the more windy the road is for your scalp's natural oils to work their way down the hair shaft throughout the course of the day. In the summer, under the beating heat, it's important to restore and repair dry and sun-damaged hair with a gentle hair mist and/or mask. We recommend our (SPIN)Mist Hydrating Dry Oil to return the vibrancy and shine back to lackluster hair. As the harsh summer heat strips hair of its moisture, (SPIN)Mist works to replace the natural moisture. Its unique formula was created to mimic sebum, your hair and skin's natural oil, so it feels weightless while making your hair soft and supple. We recommend tossing a bottle of hair mist into your beach bag or purse (especially on textured hair, curly hair, and long hair) so you can conveniently spritz throughout the day!

Looking good and feeling good often times go hand and hand. When flaunting your healthy, hydrated and sun protected skin just isn’t enough, try rocking a summery hat or killer shades. Hats provide some extra shade, and not to mention, look super stylish. Dreading wrinkles and crow’s feet around your eyes? Squinting too often can be the culprit of early wrinkles (yikes), so it might be a good idea to wear sunglasses when spending time in the sun.

Next time you go out and have fun in the sun, try to remember to pack the espinache essentials. It is never too early to start getting serious about sun protection, and keeping your skin and hair healthy and beautiful is always a good idea!
