Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide is the age-old saponifying agent and quintessential ingredient needed for soap making. The chemical is what hydrolyzes fats and oils into the sudsy bars we call soap! Soap makers know the spiel: if a product is not created using sodium hydroxide, then it is NOT a soap—it is instead a detergent. In its pure form, sodium hydroxide is highly toxic, however, once the saponification reaction of sodium hydroxide and oil takes place, no more sodium hydroxide remains in the finished product. We pinky promise.
