Sodium Benzoate

A safe preservative salt derived naturally from fruits such as plums, cranberries and apples that is used as an alternative to parabens. As with most preservatives, there is a bit of controversy around sodium benzoate because of how it can interact with vitamin C to form potential toxins. Because of its extremely low concentration as a preservative (and not an otherwise purposeful ingredient), it has been commonly recognized as nonhazardous when applied topically. While a preservative-free product would be fantastic, we chose to use safe, nature-derived preservatives to stabilize and elongate shelf life. This is so our products remain usable, fresh and shielded from the often-times water and bacteria potent areas where they are often stored (like the bathroom…eek!).

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide is the age-old saponifying agent and quintessential ingredient needed for soap making. The chemical is what hydrolyzes fats and oils into the sudsy bars we call soap! Soap makers know the spiel: if a product is not created using sodium hydroxide, then it is NOT a soap—it is instead a detergent. In its pure form, sodium hydroxide is highly toxic, however, once the saponification reaction of sodium hydroxide and oil takes place, no more sodium hydroxide remains in the finished product. We pinky promise.
